JAZZ IN MARCIACEach year the Gascony bastide village of Marciac just an hour to the north of us hosts one of the foremost jazz festivals in Europe, exceptional jazz in an exceptional setting. The 2007 festival will take place in the first two weeks of August when the village becomes jazz, a double headline concert each evening- with artists like Gilberto Gil, Ibrahim Ferrer, Marcus Miller, Taj Mahal, Wynton Marsalis, Afro Cuban All Stars, Wayne Shorter, etc etc. Free open air concerts in the village square 11 - 11 daily throughout the ten days of the festival, jazz markets, Gascony cuisine in al fresco restaurants... Eat, sleep and drink jazz for 20 hours a day if you wish. During our visit last year we counted ten bands playing simultaneously (for free!) at different points around the village.
